Steelhead Guiding on the Bulkley River
Client Feedback
He is a very accomplished
guide...
"My wife and I have fished with and known
Andre Laporte for many years. He is a very accomplished guide
and he knows the Bulkley River very well. He maintains a
top-flight jet boat. We have never had an equipment failure
while fishing with Andre. As a long standing accomplished
Steelhead Fisherman, I can say that Andre is one of the few
guides who I have fished with to teach me several new fishing
techniques and he has given me a few creative fly-tying ideas.
He is the originator of the Bulkley Mouse "Dry Fly" pattern and
ties a beautiful fly. I have always maintained while fishing
that one can eat and drink at anytime but after many hours on
the water, especially on a brisk BC fall day its nice to know
that you can also count on him for a hearty and tasty lunch.
Finally, he has a great sense of humour and a wonderful
personality, making for a most enjoyable day on the river. We
strongly recommend that if given the opportunity that you make
every effort to fish with him. Unfortunately our move to Tokyo
keeps us from fishing with him these days but some day when we
move back we will once again enjoy his great company on the
river!"

Andre Laporte is at the top of my
list
"I have been
fortunate to have fished with many fine guides in many different
parts of the world, but when it comes to B.C. steelhead, Andre
Laporte is at the top of my list. I first fished The Bulkley
with Andre in the Fall of 2000, and since then have only fished
with him .The man knows the Bulkley River intimately, and he
knows steelhead. And, he knows how to catch them, particularly
when the conditions are tough.
Best of all is Andre is fun to be with. His easy-going nature
and great sense of humour makes fishing with him a real
pleasure. I can honestly say that I've never had a bad day on
the river with Andre. He is a highly skilled Spey caster, and
his expert advice is freely given. And pay close attention to
his thoughts on steelhead flies and their design, particularly
flies for dry fly fishing steelhead. He knows of what he speaks.
Andre is a hard working and outstanding guide, and I recommend
him without hesitation."

Father Andre
"I've been fishing with Andre Laporte for
steelhead on the Bulkley River in B.C. for going on six years
now. Andre has a knack for exactly where to fish on the
Bulkley when swinging a fly.
If the water conditions are high, low or off colour he knows
every bit of pocket water on the river to get you into the fish
on a tough day. Before Andre leaves his home town his wife
makes up many different kinds of fantastic soups to last through
the short fishing season. Shore lunch consists of a hot bowl of
his Bride's soup along with the sandwich of your choice and all
the condiments that go with it. Father Andre is getting a
little long in the tooth so last year I bought him this
huge
landing net. He was a little taken back at first but my landing
ratio went up at least 10%. Since then he's become a true
believer. It's easier on the fish but you need to have him wear
a small face mask to keep him from scaring the fish away!
All kidding aside I think that Andre Laporte is probably the
best steelhead guide I've ever had in my 15 years of steelheading."

Andre calls a long fat 35”
Steelhead Little Minnows…
“Fishing the
Bulkley River, in BC with Andre Laporte is a fly fisherman’s wet
dream, pun intended. I have fished this river for many years
always using Andre and never had a bad day. Fly-fishing is not
always about catching fish, the great boat, good food, fun
stories (there are always plenty of those) and casting
instructions add to the overall enjoyment, although when you
show up at the lodge and you have caught more fish and had a
better day than all the other fishermen there, its not just
luck. It’s Andre’s 20 plus years knowing where the fish hang out
in every possible condition. Or when there is someone in your
favourite spot fishing when you arrive, Andre just says, I have
a better spot I’ve been saving for a moment just like this. Or
lets take a break and eat some home made soup my wife made for
us and let those two guys finish working that run. They are not
in the right place, those fish are still there. Enjoyable days,
every day when your fishing with Andre throwing long Spey cast
lines, fishing for “Minnows”…. that’s what Andre calls a long
fat 35” Steelhead. Little Minnows…”
